Yep. You got it.
Bi-monthly. The next issue (Issue Two) will be on Monday 3rd September and Issue Three will be released on 1st December 2011, etc.
We believe there are a great many people who want to know more about a wide range of subjects (science, technology, health, nutrition, etc) but who aren’t interested in popular science publications because they are seen as ‘academic’ and filled with lots of jargon.
Guru is about producing a popular science magazine that is accessible for everyone. We termed it a ‘science lifestyle’ magazine as we wanted to differentiate it from other publications.
People read magazines differently to how they read blogs. The most widely read blogs are normally very short and contain a just few simple messages (or funny jokes). Someone could spend hours producing an incredible online article, but most people won’t spend the time to give it justice. The style of Guru aims to reflect this difference.
Magazines are something that people make a deliberate choice to read and enjoy sitting down and to read complete articles. Lots of people treasure magazines (like a good book) and like knowing when the next issue is going to be released.
Sadly, we are unpaid and all have day jobs. Without funding we can’t give more time to the project and so won’t be able to do it more frequently.
Some of the most incredible things have come out of the internet when people with a common vision work together – take Wikipedia as an example (there are many more). We think that some of the best writers, artists, designers and photographers are on internet and not in ‘established’ journalistic teams. We wanted to create a forum for people with a passion for communicating to share their talents with a wider audience.
One of the key ideas of the Guru vision is to make it as widely available as possible. There may become a point where we need some source of funding to keep Guru going.
We think that if something is worth paying for, then people don’t mind paying for it (we certainly don’t). We are exploring a range of avenues to generate funds for Guru (e.g. advertising, sponsorship, subscriptions, and merchandise) and welcome your suggestions and offers. Guru is all about impartiality and accessibility and so whatever we decide won’t compromise these.
